Protection v privacy: a new database on children is rolled out amid concerns.

A controversial database holding information about every child in England is being tested by hundreds of social workers as of this week.

It will include data on all 1.9 million Londoners under the age of 18. Altogether, the ContactPoint database will hold information on 11 million individuals in England.

“The first frontline workers will be able to use the online directory, start to get the benefits from it and ensure we can continue to learn from their early experiences,” said Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families.

After several delays and intense criticism from privacy campaigners, the database is now scheduled to be rolled out across the UK later in the year.

It will include name, address, date of birth, gender, contact details for parents, carers and teachers as well as the child’s GP practice.

Sensitive information such as sexual health, substance misuse and mental health will only be included on ContactPoint with permission.
